About Ryuseikan Dojo in Kudanshita

Our spacious permanent Dojo is 3 minutes’ walk from Kudanshita Subway station. It is possible to practice Iai at days other than the fixed schedule (prior consultation is needed).

We practice traditional Japanese Iai based on Mugairyu (established since Edo period), which emphasize on traditional etiquette. Through this, we train our mental and physical strength and become a person with enriched spirit. Meanwhile, we embrace a culture of respect and thoughtfulness among each other.

During our practice, we emphasize on learning fundamental Iai’s form. Then, we will practice cutting by sword based on the forms learned. Besides, we will practice in pair to simulate the real fighting situation (Kumitachi). Not only that, we will have Nihonto club, where we will learn about the history of sword, ways to identify and evaluate Nihonto, ways to make or repair scabbard and handle. In here, not only we could learn about Iai’s techniques, we would also be learning the knowledges related to Nihonto.

Spacious Dojo fully furnished with air conditioner. Our displays include Traditional Japanese Armor, Nihonto, Tsuba and Kougai, which were originated from Sengoku Era. Moreover, items from the father of restoration of Mugairyu, Master Nakagawa Shiryu Yukari are also being displayed in the Dojo. It is worthwhile just to have a look at those items.

These are the different types of Nihonto, including Tsuba (guard), Kougai and other Nihonto’s parts, which are available for viewing and of course are allowed to be touched and also available for purchase. Furthermore, you could try to swing a Nihonto here too.

Member registration

1. About registering as a member
   Please fill in the application form and signed it. After that, 5000 yen together with the sports insurance fee would be collected. Member card will be issued and after that you are welcome to start your practice! Please feel free to visit our Dojo before you make up your decision.
   
   
2. About Keiko practice fees and schedule
   Member fees is 10,000 yen/month. You may come for practice as often as you want based on the Dojo’s timetable. It is possible to practice on other days despite of the fixed schedule. Please contact us for further details.
   
   
3. About Keiko practice tools
   We provide Iai’s attire and Iai sword for rental and thus please feel free to use them before you buy your own attire or Iai sword. Please contact us for further details.
   
   
   1. Attire for Keiko practice
      A set of Keiko attire includes Dougi, jyuban, Hakama and Obi. For Iai practice, you may use your own Keiko’s attire or you may order a set of them from our Dojo, which will cost around 20,000 to 30,000 yen (price differs with size).
      
      ＊During formal events such as public performance or grading examination, attire with designated logo by our Dojo is necessary. Embroidery badge is needed to cover the other existing logo on your Keiko attire (Around 3000 yen/set).
      
      
   2. Tabi and knee protector
      Please use Tabi (around 4000 yen/ pair) and knee protector (around 2000 yen/pair) during Iai practice in order to protect your knees and legs.
      
      
   3. Iai-to (sword used for Iai practice)
      Usually, a real sword is used for Iai. However, as a beginner, we recommend you use a replicated sword (mozouto) first. (Caution: swords that are sold in souvenirs’ shop might not be suitable to be used for Iai practice). It is possible to order via our Dojo and we recommend you use swords that cost around 20,000~50,000yen. Meanwhile, a casing/carrier bag for sword is about 5,000yen.
      
      
4. Sports insurance
   Members are required to join sports insurance provided by Sport Safety Public Association. An annual fee of 1,850 yen will be collected when you become our member. The insurance is renewed on March every year. We will provide a detailed explanation when you join us.

   Even if you have slightest interest to know about Iai, please join our Iai experience!
   
   First of all, please refer to the schedule page and then decide the time that you would like to come.

Samurai experience -for visitors

1. Samurai experience
   This program is specially tailored for anyone who has short-term visit to Japan and is keen to experience Samurai's spirit (Bushido). If you are interested Iai's performance and are keen to try out Japanese sword, this would be the best choice. Here, you could touch the historical Japanese armor and sword from Sengoku period while we are providing explanations about them.
